The alkaline glaze is the primary glaze used in the Vale area since the early 19th century. A very simple formula: 7 part hardwood ash, 4 part powdered glass, 2 part clay slip (mixed to the consistency of buttermilk). Adjust to taste. Thirty four years later Iā€™m still adjusting to taste. I use my version of this glaze on the majority of my work. Placement in the kiln, atmosphere, flame and firing duration all combine to result in a combination of excitement and occasional amazement. All of my work is from local clay and fired in a wood burning kiln to approximately 2400 F.
